How to Study Smarter with AI: A Practical Guide for Students

Most students revise by rereading their notes and highlighting textbooks. It feels productive — but decades of cognitive-science research show it is one of the least effective ways to learn. Why rereading and highlighting fail

In a comprehensive review, Dunlosky and colleagues (2013) rated ten popular study techniques and placed rereading and highlighting among the least useful. Active recall: test yourself instead of reviewing

Spaced repetition: work with the forgetting curve

Memory fades on a predictable schedule — Hermann Ebbinghaus first charted this forgetting curve in the 1880s. The remedy is distributed practice: spreading study across several days rather than cramming it into one session. A synthesis of 254 studies found that spacing reliably improves long-term retention compared with massed practice (Cepeda et al., 2006). Reviewing a flashcard right as you are about to forget it beats reviewing it ten times in a row.
